I remember thinking shortly before these episodes (the R&M ones of course) how could we only see "Smart" Ricks? But then I remembered Doofus Rick, and I wrote that off as the explanation. Now that there's actual confirmation of a barrier in the Ricks' intelligence in the multiverse, I can only wonder how is Doofus Rick the outlier, and why did he squeak in?
Also, if anyone somehow goes and watches these and wonders why I'm writing this a month after this ep (both The Squanch & R&M) aired, I just kinda forgot to keep up with The Squanch 😛
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
The Mr. Poopybutthole stinger hit hard as I watched it alone in my one bedroom apartment.
I Tried to figure out why this was the stinger to the season. And I think Mr Poopybutthole is basically describing his recovery from a traumatic experience. He retreaded to. a safeplace, where nothing could hurt him, but he hurt the people that loved him… Like Rick, Ricks universe is like Mr PBHs flat.
But it doesnt just end there Evil Morty has just done the same thing as Rick, he's cut himself off, how this will play out is anyones guess but it was such a great ending.
The whole capitalistic and commodification of people is interesting too, I think the show is suggesting that we need each other to remain vital able beings in the world, sometimes you're pushing, sometimes you're pulling and ideally we should share these tasks equally, but what can happen is, the people pulling (in charge), tend to want to hang on to that task which is bad for everyone and the people pushing (supporting) break away to find their own support. As a consequence we end up alone like mr poopybutthole.
I think its basically Hegels Master/Slave Dialectic
You could also read the episodic nature of this season as distracting away from the "lore" in the last episode, in the same way “capitalism” is constantly distracting us from really dealing with our on shit and recognising our needs
Evil Morty knows that the infinite curve thing is the universe. seen through ricks lense. ricks way of seeing the would is "good" and "true" but evil morty knows there. are other ways of seeing the world. Him leaving that universe is similar to a. normal person truly leaving a co-dependent. relationship.
yes this happened in episode. 9, but it was Rick who made it happen, not morty, so rick was. still in control, hence morty accepting him back with no conditions.
omg Mr Poopybutthole
I didn't like the lampshading canon stuff. Massively took me out of the story and took away the impact. Felt like it was saying "You're lame for enjoying canon". It was probably there intentionally to make it feel meaningless. Either way it massively undermined the quality of the episode for me. Took away the emotional impact.
Whooa so the central finite curve is capitalism realism?
Rick came across as a pod person. The evil morty stuff was good. Jerry's flanderisation is complete. I didn't need ricks backstory. 8 out of 10 would watch again once or twice.
Ryan: "I dont see a society controlling your mind"
Two minutes earlier: "Capitalism is human nature"
My reading of the creature as a metaphor for capitalism leans more towards the "outsourcing of pain" rather than a "masochistic nature of capitalism".
As in, under capitalism, for one side to thrive, there must be another side that goes through agonising pain.
In practical terms
we have certain type of shoes -> south east Asia has child labour
we have smartphones -> central Africa gets coltan wars
etc.
just my reading tho and I am still not fully convinced by it myself.
I'd like to have heard more about the emotional component of Rick's fragile ego, the clarity given in episode 10 to Rick's utter brokenness. I mean, he intentionally limited the universe to only worlds where Rick is the smartest, the center of everything. He lost his family, and coped by moving in with alternate versions of his family, who another version of himself care so little that he abandoned them. He is lying to himself, acting like he knows everything, but in reality he doesn't even understand basic relationships. He is so alone… He is pretending to be a god in his own universe, but instead is just terrified of being alone, terrified of accepting that the people who were there are gone forever – none of these other Beths, Mortys, etc. will ever be truly his… He is often suicidal and coping with substances. He is a mess and can only move forward if he can admit the truth to himself. Also, in Rick's universe, an "Evil Morty" is one that leaves him. Surely there's lots to discuss here.
Definitely not a fan of Ryan’s takes especially on the poopy butthole scene or capitalism. Just think for a channel that is all about deep takes and philosophy he is just not as knowledgeable about the themes being discussed.
SQUANCH!!! Great to have the boys for the finale. Enjoyed the analysis. See you all in a couple of years.
Ryan crying about limited jokes oh ep is ridiculous. I bet he loves every marvel film that gets pooped out. What a tool.
I really want to see a Wisecrack Edition on these episodes.
season 6 will probably be 9 episodes of filler, and then one relevant episode, just like this one
I don't think Evil Morty was genuinely evil. Where did he lie? Can any of us blame him for his actions based on what he learned? All he ever wanted was to escape the prison he was created in.
Sooo disappointed that Garbage Goober didn’t get a shout out
Of ten episodes, this season had about 4 good ones. Now…I wouldn't rate it 4/10…but…I don't think Roiland and Harmon had their hands on this as heavily as they have had in the past. Those post episode interviews are showcasing how many other people are writing it and…..guys…frankly….it's been markedly bad in parts. Not even consistent with itself. It often didn't feel like Rick and Morty at all in the middle there.
Regarding your epilogue discussion: A therapist also once told me that it would always be ok to talk about feelings, so (as Austin stated) instead of accusing others ("You're not respecting me") saying "I don't feel respected", in theory no one should be insulted by that and it should be ok to talk about feelings… but I also learned that this does not work with everyone, some people still get insulted or feel accused and sometimes this approach is to weak, because they say "your feelings are your issue not mine"… so I dunno, relationships are just (mostly) complicated and I think no one will ever find a one size fits all approach but it's interesting to discuss
Regarding your capitalism discussion… I would argue that the biggest issue of modern times is not so much capitalism but consumerism (or how is it called?). Everything is viewed as a product to be consumed and human beings are more and more treated the same way, of course that makes us sick. And for some reason we celebrate this attitude and the capitalists who get rich through this attitude. It's really absurd…
Austin for the WIN!
Maybe listen to him a bit more.
